Profile/Work area: 

Klaus Fischer is Head of Department of Solid Waste Management and has more than 27 years of experience. He has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering (1984) with the subject „Advanced waste water treatment with activated carbon“, and a M.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Stuttgart. He joined ISWA in 1977 and became Head of Department in 1993. Since 1993 he has been project manager and coordinator of various research and development projects in the fields of waste management, recycling, biological waste treatment, landfill technology and biological air purification.  He is chairman of the course „Biological Air Purification“ given in Esslingen (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland). He is lecturer of some courses in solid waste management at the university of Curitiba / Parana in Brazil and he is author of more than 100 scientific papers on the above mentioned topics.

Profile/Work area:

Detlef Clauß is member of the Chair of Solid Waste Management and Emissions at ISWA since 1993. He has and is participating in several projects, such as "Separate Collection of Biowaste in the City of Stuttgart", QUALORG (Programme européen pour la qualité de la valorisation organique des biodéchets), Waste from Waste Treatment Operations (WWTO). He created a computer data base for the characterisation of organic materials suitable for biological treatment and makes research on Long-term Behaviour of Landfills, Separate Collection and Treatment Options for Waste. In addition to his tasks in the Diploma studies, he is teacher in the international Master Course WASTE. His international experience includes consulting for the Sanitary Department of the City of Istanbul (ISTAC) and the autonomous Region Gaza Strip. Since 2002 he is teacher in the summer school "Basics of Waste management" in Brazil.

Profile/Work area:

Maria Alejandra Espinoza studied Environmental Engineering in Chile and has a minor in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management.  2004 she obtained the Master Degree of the Program "Air Quality Control, Solid Waste and Waste Water Process Engineering" (WASTE) of the University of Stuttgart with the topic "Hospital waste management in the city of La Paz".  She worked several years as environmental specialist and independent consultant in Bolivia.  2004 she joined the ISWA as research assistant.  In the field of solid waste, she has excellent knowledge in avoidance, recycling, treatment and disposal techniques regards municipal, hospital and hazardous wastes as well as general waste management aspects, such as collection and transportation. Her international working and education experience allows her to identify the environmental, social, legal and technical problematic regards solid waste management, especially in developing countries.

Profile/Work area: 

Angkhana Klongkarn is skilled and experienced within a broad range of water resources engineering and management as well as solid waste management. She graduated from University of Stuttgart with a master degree in environmental engineer in 2003. Following her graduation she joined the ISWA as research assistance.  She gained excellent knowledge in recycling, composting, fermentation, hospital waste and hazardous waste management. In 2005, she left to join a project of natural system for wastewater and renewable energy for and in Thailand.  While working as an environmental engineer, she was especially involved in environment organization and put her attention in the field of biomass for energy. Since 2007, she rejoined the University of Stuttgart with the focus on solid waste as a potential biomass source for sustainable energy.
