Ronald Arrieta studied Food Technology at the University of Berlin (1977) and worked three years as scientific assistant. 1980 he worked in the Institute for Nutrition and Health. From 1981 to 1986 he worked at the Universidad de Costa Rica in the area of food chemistry. Between 1986 and 1991 he made his Ph.D. at the University of Berlin in the area of Industrial Biotechnology. Since 1991 he is working in the Universidad de Costa Rica in projects related to waste treatment at communal level. He is the Director of the project "Support of environment projects on local level". He created and still cares for the project "Commerce center of valuable residues in the commune of Santa Ana (Costa Rica)". For the commune of Santa Ana he established the regulation of house wastes, which was transferred to other communes in a modified form. He also cares for the communes of Desamparados and Montes de Oca. The main objective of these last projects is the formation of small cooperatives, which with the support of the commune, collect, sort, and re-sell valuable materials. For the promotion of the cooperatives, a co-ordination with the National Institute is foreseen. Furthermore he has carried out the planning of the waste treatment project for the commune Las Juntas de Guanacaste and established the cooperative.
