Mahamad Hakimi Ibrahim graduated with a BSc (1981) and MSc. (1982) in Chemical Engineering from University of Manchester - Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), Manchester, UK and got his Ph.D degree in Chemical Engineering (1994) from the University Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi. Since 1982 he is lecturing at the USM making also research and consultancy services in Chemical Engineering, Air Pollution Technology, Environmental Engineering Education, Education for Sustainable Development, Environmental Political-Economy, Society and Environmental issues and also Gold Dinar Economy. In the USM he is the Secretary to Islamic Political Economy International Network (ISNET-USM), which organises the International Islamic Political Economy Conference Series. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Alternative Political Economy and also the coordinator of the Gold Dinar Research Group at USM. The Gold Dinar is an instrument for research into environmental equivalent for global fair environmental trade exchange/transactions. (GDRG-USM - www.usm.my/dinar). Currently he is Chairman for the Environmental Technology Division of the School of Industrial Technology, USM.

Profile/Work area:

Hamidi Abdul Aziz is a Professor in environmental engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia since 2000.  He received his Ph.D in civil engineering (environmental engineering) from University of Strathclyde, Scotland in 1992. He has published to date over 70 refereed articles in professional journals/proceedings, 5 chapters in refereed international level books and 3 chapters in refereed national level books.  Hamidi Abdul Aziz continues to serve as peer reviewer for several international journals.  He serves as an associate editor of the International Journal of Chemistry and Environment and is a Guest Editor of the Special Issue on Landfill Leachate Management and Control of the International Journal of Environment and Waste Management (IJEWM).  He currently sits as the Editorial Board Member of IJEWM.

Hamidi Abdul Aziz has become Visiting Research Fellow to Department of Environmental Engineering, Kyoto University, Japan, under Ministry of Education, Japanese Government in year 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006.  He has won various research awards related to waste management in various exhibitions.  He is currently sitting as a technical committee member for national solid waste management in Malaysia since April 2006.

Hamidi Abdul Aziz's research has focused on alleviating the problems associated with industrial wastewater discharge and solid waste management via landfilling, especially on leachate pollution.  He has been involved in more than 35 consultancy works and industrial testing for industries in the field of water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, leachate treatment, curriculum design, EIA & EMP, etc.  He has conducted over 30 funded research projects from 1992 to date with total cost over RM2 million.  Hamidi Abdul Aziz and his research group have developed the treatment system consists of a combination of biological and physical-chemical treatment of leachate in which the latter plays a very significant role in removing organic matter and heavy metals.

Mohd Suffian is a lecturer at Department of Environmental and Sustainability, School of Civil Engineering USM. Formerly, he was the Senior Manager of Pulau Burung Sanitary landfill Penang. He obtained Ph.D. in environmental engineering in 2006 from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is involved in landfill management and leachate treatment research area since 2000. Currently, he teaches EIA & solid waste management and environmental study for undergraduate course and hazardous & solid waste management for postgraduate course.

Norizan Esa graduated with a BSc (1981) in Biology from University of Manchester, UK, MA (1994) in Education from Lancaster University, UK and PhD (Science Education, 2002) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. She was a teacher in several secondary schools, teaching primarily Biology, Science and Mathematics before becoming a lecturer at a Teacher Training Institution (Institut Perguruan Sultan Abdul Halim) from 2002. She joined Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2007 as a lecturer in Science Education and Statistics Education. Her teaching and research interests include Statistics Education, Science Education, Philosophy and Thinking, Madinan Education Practice, Education for Sustainable Development and Gold Dinar Economy.

Mohd Nazri Bin Mahmud is a teaching staff of Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (Unikl Micet). He joined Unikl Micet in Dec 2002 and became Head of Department in 2004-2006. He works under environmental technology section and has more than 9 years of work experience. He teaches wastewater treatment technology and noise pollution control technology for the institute. He has a diploma in Agriculture in 1991 and a bachelor degree in environmental science in 1997 from UPM, Malaysia. Since 1997 he has been an environmental consultant, consulted various projects in the fields of wastewater technology and air pollution control technology. Most of the projects under his consultation have been approved by Malaysian Department of Environment. Currently he is proceding with his master degree majoring in environmental technology by research at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.

Profile/Work area:

Norli Ismail holds a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science from Universiti Putra, Malaysia; a Masters Degree in Chemical Processes and a Ph.D. in Environmental Technology from Universiti Sains Malaysia. She completed her Ph.D. studies in October 2003 before joining the School of Industrial Technology as a lecturer of the Environmental Technology Division. She has research experience in various areas of environmental science and technology with particular emphasis on water quality, management issues, and treatability studies in relation to water, wastewater and analytical testing. Norli Ismail is actively involved in the technical aspects of biological and physic-chemical treatability studies, bioremediation research, environmental analytical techniques, sampling and data validation. She was involved in the research project on wastewater treatment and acclimatization studies for a semiconductor industry.  She worked as co-researcher in private company for the development modification of a sewage treatment plant, and in a project for bioremediation of an industrial waste effluent (Latex). She also collaborated in the research of hydrothermal gasification of a palm oil mill effluent (POME) with Osaka Gas Ltd., Japan, in the Eco-energy department. Her current research interests are enhancement of the biogas production from agricultural biomass through anaerobic fermentation processes and the production of a bio-flocculant for water, wastewater and solid waste treatment.
