      • campaigns for the education of informal waste pickers (i.e."scavengers"),  carried out at La Alquería
      • integration of cooperatives of informal scavengers, which have organized themselves and have taken part in the educational campaign
      • Assessment of District Recycling Program (PDR)

      Type of Waste targeted

      Institutions/Organization involved

      -  Public Services Executive Administrative Unit (UAESP)

      -  Support by the District Environmental Department (SDA) and the

      -  Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá (CCB)

      Expected basic Scientific Progress

Validation of the PDR, including efficiency of source separation at home, separate collection and sorting of recyclable wastes at the pilot park

Contribution to Capacity Building and Education

These workplaces are available only for members of organized cooperatives, which have taken part in the educational process within the PDR.  As a result of the organization of scavengers into cooperatives, their quality of life will improve, since their working conditions will be secured.

For population in general the educational programs and information diffusion by media will increase awareness referring waste separation and recycling.

      Technologies applied or improved

      Manual and mechanical separation
labor intensive, non-capital intensive recovery technologies for recyclable household waste

      Social target groups involved

The first two recycling parks will generate 800 work places for informal scavengers.
