Many parents of mentally handicapped children were worried because their children were unable to find jobs. They wanted to start a program that would teach their children skills so they could find a job. At the same time, the Municipality of Santa Ana wanted to start a recycling program to reduce the amount of solid waste produced by the community. They were able to combine both programs into one, and created a unique recycling center that employs mentally handicapped youth meanwhile teaching them handcrafts, such as basket weaving and pottery, some days a week. Unfortunately, the job market is still discriminatory related to mentally handicapped people, and the jobs that were supposed to be temporary for them have become permanent.

      Applied Results and Impact

40 Ton/month or 50% of the household wastes in Santa Ana is re-collected by the project.

The municipality has its own recovery center. APREDISPROSA has acquired experience and knowledge in the waste management and marketing of useable materials. This project demonstrated that ecological waste management is possible and that this is a wise way how handicapped people could be integrated into the society
