Overall Objectives

      • to minimize the generation of solid waste

      • to achieve a correct handling, starting from segregation, storage, transport and distribution of all waste generated at the facilities and the aircrafts.

      Type of Waste targeted

      -  aircraft waste
      -  industrial waste, e.g. hangars
      -  cargo terminal waste
      -  passenger terminal waste and
      -  waste from offices

      Waste recycling:

paper, plastic, metal, glass, rubber, banners, tires, etc.

      Hazardous waste:

oil aircraft, fluorescent lamps, chemicals products, asbestos, health wastes, etc.

      Organic waste:

remains of food, pruned material from the green spaces of the airport terrain etc.

      Tailings:

      laminated paper, bath-room wastes etc.

      Description

Previous to the introduction of the SWMP there was no use at all of the recyclable material. All residues coming from aircrafts were considered as hazardous (septic) waste, which was taken to a septic waste unit, increasing costs for transportation and final disposal.  Wastes coming from airport facilities were taken to a sanitary landfill, not considering the potential value of waste. This caused major environmental impacts and decreased the life-time of the landfill, because large amounst of the recyclable waste were improperly conveyed to it.

By implementing the SWMP, the management related to segregation, collection, storage and management of the different residues was changed.  The recycling processes were one of the priorities of the new concept, as well as reducing the volume of waste in the whole airport.  Apart from training the permanent staff members, a working team called "Waste Management Commission" was initiated, which integrates members of the various companies that are part of the airport complex and informs about the concept.

With the implementation of the SWMP it was possible to reduce costs from R$ 65.000,00 (before the SWMP) to R$ 24.000,00 (2005), resulting in a reduction by approximately 60%.

      Standards, Indicators, Criteria for Assessment

The project considers the environmental laws, resolutions and standards, the following in particular:

      • Federal Law 9605/98
      • Resolution CONAMA 05/86
      • Resolution  Anvisa 217/2001

      Institutions/Organization involved

       SENAI-CIC/CETSAM and INFRAERO

Contribution to Capacity Building and Education

The project was successful in changing the behaviour of staff members. They act at the same time as multiplier agent at their homes and daily lives. In addition, all recyclable material is donated to an Association for Mothers and Children Protection, meeting thus one of the objectives of Infraero, which is the social responsibility, introducing at the same time a better environmental practice.
